In an odd way, it was appropriate for Jerry Only of The Misfits to belt out an operatic rendition of the national anthem at the season championship of Seattle’s Rat City Roller Girls. Sure, the notion of a flagship hardcore punk band’s frontman singing at what is essentially a roller skating competition may be seen as heresy to the genre’s radical purists.
But I say grow up; hardcore hasn’t been a credible form of rebellion since the 1980s. And The Misfits aren’t exactly known for taking, well, anything very seriously. In fact, a flat-track roller derby is precisely the kind of sport that warrants a Misfits soundtrack. I wouldn’t step into a rink (or track, or whatever you call it) with the ornery chicks who play it. Hell, they make the NHL look civilized. Check out this video and see for yourself ...
